Built by hand. Rooted in history.
River Valley Stonework was born out of a deep respect for history, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of natural materials. Matt, the owner and lead mason, studied history with a particular fascination for ancient architecture — drawn to the way early civilizations shaped their environments with little more than their hands, local stone, and time-earned technique. That fascination eventually led him to the centuries-old tradition of dry stone masonry: the art of building without mortar, relying instead on precision, gravity, and skill.
Dry stone construction isn’t just beautiful — it’s exceptionally strong. When properly built, these structures are flexible, breathable, and able to withstand the elements for generations. A well-crafted dry stone wall will last hundreds of years, moving with the land rather than against it. Each stone is chosen and placed with intention, creating something not only functional but deeply connected to the landscape. For Matt, this is more than a trade — it’s a way to carry forward a time-honored practice with care, integrity, and a deep love for the natural world.
